There are 800 to 1,000 people stranded in motels in St. Mary Parish unable to return to their homes besieged by Hurricane Katrina. Many more are in the area staying with friends and family.

GRIDLEY -- Carolyn K. Asper, 82, of Gridley, and former area schoolteacher, died at 8:10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, 2005, at Meadows Mennonite Nursing Home, rural Chenoa. Her funeral was held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First United Church, Gridley, the Revs. Jack Nicolay and Steve Estes officiated.
